The Acorn Woodpecker is an insectivorous granivore that inhabit the western coastal pine forests of the United States, and migrate south to Central America during the winter. Behaviorally, they are very unique. Acorn Woodpeckers have 'family groups' of up to 12 or more individuals, who in which cooperate in raising young, foraging, and storing food.
Unlike other relatives, Acorn Woodpeckers are very specialized, and get most of their calories from the consumption of acorns. This particular species heavily relies on them to survive. Occasionally, they will feed on sap, insects, and fruit.
They store the acorns they've collected by creating holes in objects called granaries, in which they store and defend their cache for later consumption. While the most common granary bases are dead trees, the acorn woodpecker will also turn man-made items such as fence posts into storage facilities.
